Petriolo Spa & Resort: light you do not notice, and that is the point

Opal glass bowls in the coffers, pleated fabric fittings along the corridors, table lamps of two characters in the rooms. The light is ours: a thermal resort where no fitting asks to be looked at.

A thermal hotel does not need to impress anyone

People arrive at a thermal resort in order to be quiet. The light that serves them is not the light that gets noticed: it is the light that removes every reason to look up. In the suite the chandelier stays at the far end, in the arch, and what is lit in the foreground is a table lamp.

It is a hierarchy settled at design stage: the important piece goes far away and the one that actually lights goes next to whoever is sitting. The opposite of what you do in a lobby.

In the coffers the light joins the drawing

A coffered ceiling already has its rhythm. The opal glass bowls do not interrupt it: one per panel, close to the surface, becoming part of the grid instead of hanging beneath it.

The bowl shape sends almost all the light upwards: the ceiling lights and the room receives reflected light. No source aimed at people, which in a thermal setting is exactly the brief.

Four opal glass bowls set into the panels of the coffered ceiling
The pleated fabric ceiling fittings aligned along the corridor, shrinking towards the far end

A corridor is measured in steps, and the fittings count them

Along the corridor the pleated fabric fittings repeat at constant spacing and shrink towards the end. It is not only perspective: it is how a guest understands how far is left without reading a number.

The pleating has a precise reason: the folds stripe the light and break up the flat disc a plain diffuser would make. In a long corridor you see the whole difference.

Four pieces solving four different problems

The modelled ceiling, the mirror, the tailoring and the severe room.

The lounge with its arches and the bowl fitting held by metal straps

A bowl held, rather than hung

Where the ceiling is modelled a pendant would break the drawing. The glass bowl sits close, held by metal straps that become its only ornament: the light goes up, the ceiling stays whole.

The opal glass cylinders lit on the bathroom mirror, among the marbles

In the bathroom the glass does another job

At the mirror you need light on the face, not atmosphere. Opal glass cylinders, vertical, at eye height: no reflection in the face and no shadow under the chin.

The table lamp with pleated shade on a bronze candelabra base, on the round table

The pleated shade is a piece of tailoring

The pleating is not a print: it is fabric folded by hand and stitched onto the frame. Lit, the folds stripe the light, which is why a plain shade does not give the same effect.

The table lamp with its pale shade on a dark cross frame, with a stone base

And a table lamp can also be severe

A dark cross frame, a stone base, a pale crisp shade. In the same hotel as the bronze and the pleats: two different characters, for two rooms that ask for different things.

In a resort the best light is the one nobody comments on

Send us the plans and tell us what character the rooms need: we come back with the right fittings, and the numbers behind the light.
