Completed project
UNA Hotel Malpensa: a black Venetian-style chandelier, and the lanterns of reception and bar
The UNA Hotels Malpensa is a four-star hotel with 157 rooms in Cerro Maggiore, between Milan and the airport, opened in December 2004. We are among its lighting suppliers: blown-glass pendants for reception and bar, wall lamps, glass spheres on the staircase, the restaurant chandelier.
Project data

One wall lamp, red on metal and white on red
Renzo Costa designed the hotel around the sea: eleven floors between two silver sails, a third red sail, and inside, red to mark the public areas. There we placed a wall lamp: a truncated-pyramid shade above a pendant of elongated lozenges in clear crystal.
One shape, and the colour changes with the background: the shade is red on the metal-clad pillar beside reception, white on the red wall. That way the fitting stays the same and always reads.
Above the bar counter, a row of black lanterns
Above the bar's polished metal counter hangs a row of cylinder pendants in two-tone Murano glass: black, with a pale band at the bottom, hung on thin wires. The magazine Progetti Milano likens them to lanterns swaying at sea.
At reception the shape changes: above the red desk hang blown-glass cones in two tones, black with a red band at the bottom and chrome-plated steel details. Two spaces, two shapes of one family: you recognise the hand without seeing the same object twice.

On the restaurant staircase, an old form in black
The same magazine describes the restaurant's spiral staircase and its large Venetian-style chandelier: a «Ca' Rezzonico» in black blown Murano glass, hung from a wooden ceiling box decorated in gold leaf. Arms on several tiers, leaves, flowers, pale candles. Among the prizes at the opening party, says the UNA Hotels press release, was a hand-worked glass vase of ours.
Among curves, glossy surfaces and solid colours, a historic form risks looking borrowed. Black reduces it to a silhouette: in a hotel designed around movement, the chandelier is the fixed point.
Two more lights: the reception and the staircase
The glass spheres above the staircase and the cones above the reception desk, in the photographs of our portfolio.

The spheres on the staircase
A composition of blown-glass spheres coloured in the mass, hung from a track with spotlights: they hang above the spiral staircase down to the restaurant and, in a row, beneath the gilded panel.

The reception cones
Two-tone blown-glass cones, black with a red base, hung on spiral cables; on the steel pillar, the wall lamp with its red shade.
Reception, bar, restaurant: each has its own light
Send us the drawings of the public areas and the rooms: you get back the lighting design with the bespoke fittings, and if you then order from us that calculation is free.
