The wrong dimmer sends the order back: DALI, 0-10V and phase cut

A correct fitting with the wrong protocol does not adapt: it gets replaced. It is the error found at commissioning, when the goods are already on site and the payment has already gone out.

You do not dim the light: you dim the driver

In an LED fitting the knob never touches the light. It touches the power supply, and the power supply obeys one precise language: a digital signal on two wires, a direct voltage between zero and ten volts, a mains wave cut in half. These are different languages, not variants of one, and a driver that speaks one does not understand the others.

This explains the thing that surprises almost everyone: two identical fittings, same light, same body, same price, can be incompatible with the same installation because inside they carry two different power supplies. The difference does not show in a photograph, does not appear in a render and is often not even on the first page of the catalogue. It appears in a code, and the code is read by whoever knows what to look for. And it is a fact the end client cannot verify by looking at the fitting: they have to trust whoever wrote the specification, which is exactly why that line has to be written properly.

The four languages, two lines each

The phase cut works on the mains wave and needs no extra wires: it is the cheapest and the most temperamental, because the result depends on how many fittings sit on the line and how they are built. 0-10V brings two extra wires and dims with a voltage: simple, robust, and without addresses — everything on the line does the same thing.

DALI brings two wires and speaks in addresses: every fitting has a name, is controlled alone or in a group, and can answer back — it can say it has failed. It costs more in cable and in commissioning, and it gives back the ability to change scenes without touching a wire. DMX comes from the stage, is very fast and suited to colour and movement, and in a hotel it is used where light performs: façades, pools, event rooms.

Where the error is born, nearly always

It is born the moment the electrical installation and the supply of the fittings are given to two different parties at two different times. The installation is designed early and laid early, because cables go into the walls; the fittings are chosen late, once interior design has decided. In between, nobody rereads the line that says which language the cables already laid are meant to speak.

The specification often writes «dimmable» and stops there. But dimmable is not a characteristic: it is a family of characteristics that are incompatible with one another. Writing it without the protocol is like writing «with a socket» without saying which: it looks like a requirement and binds nobody, and at commissioning everybody is formally right.

The five points where design and supply come apart

These are the points where somebody decides something without knowing they are deciding for somebody else too. None of them is an error of ignorance: they are all errors of sequence:

  • the electrical contractor lays two control wires and nobody writes in the spec which protocol will run on them
  • the bespoke fitting is ordered without naming the driver, and arrives with the standard one
  • a lamp is changed mid-works and the new one has a driver that does not speak the same language
  • the hotel control system is chosen afterwards, and wants addresses the installation does not have
  • maintenance replaces a failed driver with one equivalent in wattage but not in protocol

Why phase cut disappoints in a hotel

On paper it works: it costs little, wants no extra wires and is controlled from a wall dimmer everyone recognises. In practice, in a hotel, phase cut produces exactly the faults guests write about in reviews: light that flickers at the bottom of the range, the transformer humming in a quiet bedroom, the step you can feel when the knob passes a certain point.

The reason is that this control was never meant for LED: it was born for filament lamps, where dimming was a question of power. An LED driver has to interpret it, and every manufacturer interprets it its own way. Putting fittings from two different suppliers on the same line means putting two interpretations together, and the result cannot be predicted on paper: it is tested.

DALI costs more and gives something back

On a large supply DALI adds cable, adds commissioning and adds a person who knows how to address the fittings. That is a real cost, and it has to be stated. What it gives back is that every fitting has an address: it is controlled on its own, joins different scenes at different moments, and above all it can say when it has failed.

That last point is worth more than it seems in a large property. Without addresses, a dark fitting in a corridor is discovered by a guest. With addresses, it is discovered by the system, and maintenance arrives knowing which piece and where. Across a hundred fittings the difference is organisational; across a thousand it is financial.

The questions to put in the specification

There are four lines, and they are worth more than ten pages of aesthetic description. They belong in the spec while the installation is still a drawing, because once the cables are laid the protocol is no longer a choice:

  • which protocol, written out in full: DALI-2, 0-10V, leading edge or trailing edge phase cut
  • the minimum dimming depth required, and whether one per cent really has to be reached
  • how many fittings per line and what maximum load the control can carry
  • who does the commissioning and who hands the address map over to the owner

One per cent is not a specification detail

Many drivers claim to go down to one per cent, and almost none do it cleanly. Below a certain threshold dimming becomes stepped, the colour drifts towards green or towards pink, and identical fittings on the same line stop at different levels. In a dining room this is visible, and it is visible because the eye compares two points that are next to each other.

If the design foresees very low evening scenes — a lobby at eleven at night, a restaurant at the end of service — the dimming depth and its quality have to be asked for the way you ask for a load rating: with a number and with a test. One sample lit on site at the planned level costs half a day and closes the argument before the order goes out.

The driver is the part that gets replaced

An LED lasts far longer than its power supply: that is why almost every fault seen at three or four years is a driver fault and not a source fault. This changes one thing in the specification: it is not enough that the driver is right today, it has to be available and replaceable in five years without taking the fitting off the ceiling.

A driver on board inside a welded body is a disposable fitting wearing the look of a durable one. A remote driver in an accessible spot is a maintenance decision paid once and collected for ten years. It is a question to put to the supplier before the order, not at the first service call.

Mixing suppliers on one line

On a contract supply it happens nearly always: decorative fittings from one supplier, technical ones from another, track from a third. As long as the protocol is digital, living together is reasonable, because the language is standardised and whoever speaks it speaks it the same way. With 0-10V living together is possible but has to be tested: the response curve is not identical between manufacturers.

With phase cut, mixing suppliers on one line is the fastest recipe for a site that does not close. If it really has to be done, the lines are separated by supplier and the extra cable is accepted as a cost: it is far less than the cost of a disputed supply.

What it costs to find out at commissioning

A fitting with the wrong protocol cannot be upgraded and cannot adapt: either the driver is changed, which on a bespoke piece means opening it again, or the fitting is changed. In the first case a week is lost and the seal is at risk; in the second the supply is lost. In both cases the site stops at exactly the point where it was already late.

And there is the cost that appears in no quotation: the argument. When the spec says only «dimmable», nobody is formally wrong, and the negotiation is not won by whoever is right: it is won by whoever has more time. On a site with a fixed opening date, nobody has more time. Asking for the protocol together with the dimensions does not lengthen the negotiation: it shortens it, because it removes the one fact that could send it back to the beginning once the goods are ready.

How we handle it

On bespoke pieces the driver is not a component chosen at the end from whatever fits: it is a constraint that enters the drawing together with the weight and the IP rating, because it decides the internal space, the heat to dissipate and the way the piece opens for service.

That is why when a request arrives we ask for the protocol before the quotation and not after the confirmation: it is not bureaucracy, it is that a quotation made without that fact is a number that will change, and a number that will change helps nobody decide.

The knob does not touch the light

It touches the power supply, and the power supply speaks one language only. Two identical fittings can be incompatible with the same installation because inside they carry two different drivers: a difference invisible in a photograph.

«Dimmable» is not a requirement

It is a family of characteristics incompatible with one another. Writing it without the protocol binds nobody, and at commissioning everybody is formally right.

The driver is the part that dies

Faults at three or four years are almost always the power supply, not the LED. What matters is that it is available and replaceable without taking the fitting off the ceiling.

The protocol is decided before the quotation
